Getting Started

Initially I would like to meet up with you to discuss what you already know about your immediate family and to record details to get me started on my search. I can either come to your home or we can meet for coffee and a chat somewhere locally.

Before our meeting please take the opportunity to speak to some of your relatives to see if they can give you any information to make the initial search easier. If you have any family documents (eg birth certificates etc.) please have those to hand. If possible a simple hand drawn family tree can prove very useful.

Once I have located your ancestors on the 1901 census I should be able to trace them back to the first census of 1841. The censuses provide information about where they lived, about their families and their professions.

If you have limited information then don’t worry it should still be possible to start searching however I may need to order copies of certificates for you. These usually take about a week to arrive from the Records Office.
